In NE Ohio it’s not too difficult to participate in the farm-to-table, buy-local movement on a reasonable budget: milk, cheese, ice cream, craft beer, bread, etc. So, it’s no surprise to learn from a recent Crain’s Cleveland Business article by Jeremy Nobile that the number of Ohio-based wineries has increased from 89 ten years ago to 265 last year, including a mission driven, urban core winery—The Vineyards and Biocellar of Château Hough—in CLE that grows grapes on less than one acre of land.
A couple of other wineries highlighted in the article include Ferrante Winery & Ristorante in Geneva, Ohio (east of Cleveland, on the shores of Lake Erie)…
…and Gervasi Vinyard in Canton, Ohio (south of Akron and roughly equidistant between Cleveland and Pittsburgh). The vineyard is Tuscany-inspired, which makes sense since the Codospoti family grew grapes on a farm in Italy before immigrating to the U.S.
The article also mentions some service and education providers including the wine degree program of Kent State University’s Ashtabula campus and Bacchus Vineyard & Winery Services (see David Popp, consultant/proprietor, pictured earlier in article).
Lastly, if anyone wants to find a winery to visit in Ohio, then browse the Catch Wine website as it has a handy dynamic map and list by town.
~Cheers.
